Meet the Artists Reception: Sun, Nov. 10 from 2-4 p.m.

 Gallery B is pleased to host The National Capital Art Glass Guild’s juried exhibition “Glass Unlimited.” The exhibit will showcase work from 35 different Guild members including mosaic, fused, stained and blown glass. The National Capital Art Glass Guild (NCAGG) was founded in 1978 as a community of artisans working in stained glass and has grown over the years to include all forms of glass art. Through meetings, workshops, presentations, and exhibits, the NCAGG provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences and promotes glass as an art form. There will be an opening reception Saturday, October 12 from 6-8pm. Gallery hours are Fridays, 12-8pm, Saturdays, 12-5pm, Sundays 11am-4pm.

 Loriann Signori is a painter of light, air, and energy. While her preferred mediums have always been oil or pastel, her methods, techniques and aesthetic aims have all undergone significant transformation. Her paintings, situated between abstraction and recognizable form, are explorations of the color of air and beauty. Recognized as an Eminent Pastelist with the International Pastel Society, and a winner of the President’s Award in 2024, she is represented by Warm Springs Gallery in Warm Springs, VA.

This competition invites local D.C./Maryland/Virginia artists to submit their work and be awarded $14,000 in prizes to four selected winners. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Up to eight finalists will be chosen to display their work at Bethesda’s Gallery B in June 2025.

The competition will be juried by Kevin Mitchell, Lecturer of Studio Art at The Catholic University of America; Mary Proenza, Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University; and James Williams II, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

The first-place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1995 may also be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Each artist must submit five images, an application, and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

 "Does Our Constitution Still Work?" with Congressman Jamie Raskin, political scientist Dr. Norman Ornstein, and University of Maryland professor, Dr. Holly Brewer.

 Presented by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and Montgomery History, "Does Our Constitution Still Work" will be an unscripted conversation between three eminent Constitutional thinkers -- Congressman Jamie Raskin; Dr. Norman Ornstein, emeritus scholar at the American Enterprise Institute; and Dr. Holly Brewer of the University of Maryland. The discussion will offer insights into both historical and contemporary events, including issues dealing with the Electoral College, the politics of polarization, and strengthening our democracy.

A Wider Circle Toy Donation Drive

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Professor of Saxophone at Howard University for over 30 years, Saxophonist Charlie Young coordinates the school's Instrumental Jazz Studies. Playing live and recording with various ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the US Navy Band, the Count Basie Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Young has worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones, performing from London's Royal Albert Hall to New York's Carnegie Hall. Young is the longtime artistic Director/ Conductor and lead saxophonist of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He joined the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks as principal woodwind; in 2013 he was appointed itsArtistic Director and Conductor.

Double bass player Herman Burney was born in Washington, DC and raised in Winston-Salem. Herman's worldwide experience includes performing with the greatest jazz musicians. He has played iconic houses, including the Blue Note, the Village Vanguard, Yoshi’s, Sweet Basil, Iridium, Smoke, Birdland, the Jazz Showcase, the Jazz Bistro, Jazz Alley, the Jazz Bakery, Vartan’s Jazz, the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. His tour of South America, Australia, Europe, Canada includes the large jazz festivals.

Oberlin-trained pianist Eric Harper has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia but he is best known for his many local appearances at local Metro DC area venues on piano with Charlie Byrd, Ethan Iverson, Scott Hamilton, Bob Wilber, John Hicks, and Chuck Redd. Harper has been on the teaching faculty at Gettysburg College, the Jazz Workshop and the Washington Conservatory of Music.

Chris may be our Patron Services Manager, but he also has a wealth of Disney knowledge. Chris has always been a fan of Disney Movies, from Classics like The Little Mermaid to the DCOMs of High School Musical. Chris graduated from Towson University with his BFA in Acting and went to work for Mister Mouse himself at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. When he returned from Florida he found a home here at Olney Theatre Center and is excited to finally use his Disney knowledge for good.

 Artists & Makers Studios on Parklawn Drive in Rockville is thrilled to host Olney Art Association in the Invited Artist Gallery for the month of December. The exhibit runs from December 4th through December 18th, with an opening reception on Friday, December 6th, 5 – 8pm. This Small Works exhibition features members’ work. In 1974 rural Olney was considered to be out in the country, with many active farms. Five people with a passion for creating original artwork started talking to each other about art. They didn’t have much formal art training. Meeting in each other’s homes they shared ideas about art and started inviting local artists to participate and demonstrate art techniques. Over time Olney Art Association evolved as an organization. Art shows were planned and the public was invited and more people wanted to join to grow and share their creativity and love of art. With 70 member artists, the Association is now considered to be one of the premier art groups in the DMV. Enjoy additional exhibits “The Blues” with Resident Artists in the Gallery Hall, a mini-solo with Mark McAlister in the Lounge Gallery, a Pop-Up Shop with Colleen Darkow, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. Open Studios building wide will welcome visitors. Shop and support local working artists, makers, and professionals. US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) maintains millions of priceless historical documents, some of which can be accessed via the troubled Genealogy Program, while others require FOIA requests, or remain out of reach entirely. Panelists will provide a brief background on some of the record sets; why the documents are vital to knowing 19th and 20th Century US Immigration history; and what lies ahead.
Panelists will:

Update participants on advocacy efforts to push USCIS to transfer historical records in its custody to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA);
Discuss C-Files and the urgency of needing USCIS to change their status from temporary to permanent (destruction date: 2056);
Discuss P-Files and explain that while their status has changed from temporary to permanent, P-Files are still all but inaccessible; and
Explain how legislative advocacy is necessary to implement these changes, and how JGSGW members can play an important role in this, given the influence their federal elected officials play in oversight for USCIS (MD-Raskin; MD-Mfume; VA-Connolly) and funding for NARA (MD-Van Hollen; MD-Harris; MD-Hoyer; MD-Ruppersberger VA-Cline; VA-Wexton)

Participation of genealogists and genealogy societies in advocating for better Federal records management is essential to ensure access to records now and in the future. The future of USCIS-held records remains in jeopardy if the community does not work to protect them.

This one-hour program, conducted over Zoom at 1:30 PM Eastern Time, is free for members. This is one of the many activities that is a benefit of JGSGW membership. Panelists
Rich Venezia is a New Jersey native who now calls Philadelphia home. He founded Rich Roots Genealogy in 2013. He was a member of the research team of Genealogy Roadshow (PBS) for two seasons, and also consulted on Follow Your Past (Travel Channel). He is an expert in the research of 20th-century immigrant ancestors, especially underutilized record sources and federal records. He also specializes in Italian and Irish research. Additionally, he assists clients with dual citizenship applications for Ireland and Italy, and is a proud Italian dual citizen. He holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University. He lectures nationwide, and spoke about "How to Grow Empathy From Uncovering Your Roots" at TEDx Pittsburgh 2017. Rich is the founder of RecordsNotRevenue.com, which he co-leads with Renée K. Carl and Marian Smith.

Renée K. Carl left the public policy world for professional genealogy, finding that researching dead people is easier than working with Congress. Her background in government and cultural anthropology brings a unique perspective to locating and interpreting records. Renée is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington, and the JewishGen Latvia Research Group. Renée passionately advocates for historic preservation and records access. To that end, she is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists Advocacy Committee and serves as co-leader and policy advisor to the RecordsNotRevenue.com campaign.  One can be tempted to think that, although beauty comes in many forms, and although the people, places or objects that exhibit beauty are of diverse sorts, it can only be sensed visually. What is the perception process that underlies the experience of beauty from the perspective of a woman without the sense of sight? SEEING WITHOUT SIGHT is a documentary film that delves into the lives of girls and women with vision loss, challenging viewers to perceive beauty beyond sight. Through their stories, it aims to redefine societal norms of beauty, inviting a deeper understanding and appreciation.

ABOUT WORK-IN-PROGRESS SCREENINGS

Docs In Progress has workshopped more than 175 documentaries through our signature rough cut Work-in-Progress screenings, where filmmakers share a not-quite finished version of their documentary to a general audience.

During the event, a facilitator from Docs In Progress leads a workshop-style feedback session where the audience provides constructive feedback on story progression, story structure, character/topic development of these not-quite finished documentaries. This can be essential to help filmmakers move forward with their creative process toward finalizing the film.

While we welcome and treasure feedback from other filmmakers or topic experts at these screenings, we are equally interested in hearing from laypeople since most filmmakers are making films for a general audience.

 The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is excited to announce the 21st annual Bethesda Painting Awards. This competition invites local D.C./Maryland/Virginia artists to submit their work and be awarded $14,000 in prizes to four selected winners. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Up to eight finalists will be chosen to display their work at Bethesda’s Gallery B in June 2025.

The competition will be juried by Kevin Mitchell, Lecturer of Studio Art at The Catholic University of America; Mary Proenza, Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University; and James Williams II, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

The first-place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1995 may also be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Each artist must submit five images, an application, and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

Gallery B welcomes artists Kate Norris and Jennifer McBrien from December 6 – January 12, 2025. The exhibition aims to foster a visual conversation that highlights the interplay between tearing, collaging, and the rhythmic motion of needle and thread. The dynamic placement of larger-scale pieces alongside multi-dimensional suspended artworks showcases their distinct perspectives while inviting viewers to explore the connections and parallels that exist between their creations. 

Gallery hours are Fridays – Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00pm, and Sundays from 11:00am to 2:00pm. 

On Friday, December 13th, an opening reception will be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

 The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is excited to announce the 21st annual Bethesda Painting Awards. This competition invites local D.C./Maryland/Virginia artists to submit their work and be awarded $14,000 in prizes to four selected winners. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Up to eight finalists will be chosen to display their work at Bethesda’s Gallery B in June 2025.

The competition will be juried by Kevin Mitchell, Lecturer of Studio Art at The Catholic University of America; Mary Proenza, Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University; and James Williams II, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

The first-place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1995 may also be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Each artist must submit five images, an application, and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

The Art League of Germantown (ALOG) brings their small artworks to the Arts Barn, including paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, notecards, glass, wood and other mediums. Stop by to bring home a treasure for yourself or someone special.

Gallery B welcomes artists Kate Norris and Jennifer McBrien from December 6 – January 12, 2025. The exhibition aims to foster a visual conversation that highlights the interplay between tearing, collaging, and the rhythmic motion of needle and thread. The dynamic placement of larger-scale pieces alongside multi-dimensional suspended artworks showcases their distinct perspectives while inviting viewers to explore the connections and parallels that exist between their creations. 

Gallery hours are Fridays – Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00pm, and Sundays from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

Short (5-30 minutes), documentary films by filmmakers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. will be considered. Films must have been completed within the last two years. All topics are eligible. Filmmakers chosen for the 2024 festival are not eligible and may submit again for the 2026 festival.

Up to five films will be selected to be shown. A film by a young filmmaker, under age 18 (or still in High School Spring 2025), may also be chosen. Filmmakers whose films are selected will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Young filmmakers will receive $250.

Filmmakers are required to attend the film festival screenings in April and speak about their work.

Boykin, Alice Parker, Eric Whitacre, and more outstanding composers who contribute to musical excellence in American Choral Repertoire.  The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites filmmakers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. to submit a recent, original short (5-30 minutes) film for the 13th annual Bethesda Film Fest!

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites filmmakers to submit recent, original work for the 13th annual Bethesda Film Fest, by January 10, 2025. The festival will be will feature in-person screenings of the top selected filmmakers April 4th & 5th.

Short (5-30 minutes), documentary films by filmmakers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. will be considered. Films must have been completed within the last two years. All topics are eligible. Filmmakers chosen for the 2024 festival are not eligible and may submit again for the 2026 festival.

Up to five films will be selected to be shown. A film by a young filmmaker, under age 18 (or still in High School Spring 2025), may also be chosen. Filmmakers whose films are selected will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Young filmmakers will receive $250.

Filmmakers are required to attend the film festival screenings in April and speak about their work.

This competition invites local D.C./Maryland/Virginia artists to submit their work and be awarded $14,000 in prizes to four selected winners. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Up to eight finalists will be chosen to display their work at Bethesda’s Gallery B in June 2025.

The competition will be juried by Kevin Mitchell, Lecturer of Studio Art at The Catholic University of America; Mary Proenza, Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University; and James Williams II, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

The first-place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1995 may also be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Each artist must submit five images, an application, and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

The Art League of Germantown (ALOG) brings their small artworks to the Arts Barn, including paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, notecards, glass, wood and other mediums. Stop by to bring home a treasure for yourself or someone special.

Gallery B welcomes artists Kate Norris and Jennifer McBrien from December 6 – January 12, 2025. The exhibition aims to foster a visual conversation that highlights the interplay between tearing, collaging, and the rhythmic motion of needle and thread. The dynamic placement of larger-scale pieces alongside multi-dimensional suspended artworks showcases their distinct perspectives while inviting viewers to explore the connections and parallels that exist between their creations. 

Gallery hours are Fridays – Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00pm, and Sundays from 11:00am to 2:00pm. 

On Friday, December 13th, an opening reception will be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

The competition will be juried by Kevin Mitchell, Lecturer of Studio Art at The Catholic University of America; Mary Proenza, Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University; and James Williams II, Professor of Painting at Maryland Institute College of Art.

The first-place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1995 may also be awarded $1,000.

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Each artist must submit five images, an application, and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

Gallery B welcomes artists Kate Norris and Jennifer McBrien from December 6 – January 12, 2025. The exhibition aims to foster a visual conversation that highlights the interplay between tearing, collaging, and the rhythmic motion of needle and thread. The dynamic placement of larger-scale pieces alongside multi-dimensional suspended artworks showcases their distinct perspectives while inviting viewers to explore the connections and parallels that exist between their creations. 

Gallery hours are Fridays – Saturdays from 12:00 to 5:00pm, and Sundays from 11:00am to 2:00pm. 

On Friday, December 13th, an opening reception will be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

 The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites filmmakers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. to submit a recent, original short (5-30 minutes) film for the 13th annual Bethesda Film Fest!

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites filmmakers to submit recent, original work for the 13th annual Bethesda Film Fest, by January 10, 2025. The festival will be will feature in-person screenings of the top selected filmmakers April 4th & 5th.

Short (5-30 minutes), documentary films by filmmakers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. will be considered. Films must have been completed within the last two years. All topics are eligible. Filmmakers chosen for the 2024 festival are not eligible and may submit again for the 2026 festival.

Up to five films will be selected to be shown. A film by a young filmmaker, under age 18 (or still in High School Spring 2025), may also be chosen. Filmmakers whose films are selected will receive an honorarium of $1,000. Young filmmakers will receive $250.

Filmmakers are required to attend the film festival screenings in April and speak about their work.
